On 14th December 1862 by royal decree the municipality of Carate becomes Carate Lario adding the etymon Lario which indicates cartographically its position on the shores of Lake Como. The same etymon is to be found in other villages on Lake Como such as Faggeto Lario, Gera Lario,Oliveto Lario, Pianello del Lario, too. Yet in 1927 another decree annexes the territory of Urio (from the Latin “orum” = edge) to Carate giving birth to Carate Urio as we cur-rently know it. Like all the other villages on the Romantic shore it also has an extension which goes from the lake to the mountain ridge of the “Via dei Monti Lariani”. And here the relationship between Earth and Water has never been more accurate and true: rocky and fluid like the character of its inhabitants.
